F&F Fall Clean-up Reminder 10/16/15‏

Faith & Food Friends,

Fall Clean-up Tomorrow Morning   

Tomorrow morning, Sat, Oct 17, at 9:30am, we will gather to do fall clean-up in the garden. Please join us to work, discuss and plan for next year.

This year our garden did not produce as well as in the past.  We will need to make some decisions for next year, get the soil tested and do some repair work on the raised beds.  Somehow, the south-east bed was damaged.  It looks like something pushed out the north-east wood corners, split the wood and pulled the screws completely out.  I can't see that happening on its own.  I'll send out more info after some of us talk tomorrow morning.

Also, I did not receive any report of squash being delivered and the vines look pretty spent right now. This, too, is a puzzle, as I saw many growing earlier in the season.

It's been another great year to help those in our community who are struggling.  Looking forward to next year and an improved yield.

Garden Helpers 

• We thank Kun Wha, The Kesslers, The Okonkwos and The VZs for tending the garden over last month, respectively.
• Kun Wha delivered 18 pounds of produce to Food Gatherers during her week.
• The Okonkwos - 41 pounds.
• The VZs  - 138 pounds of tomatoes and carrots!!! Wayne took a picture of half of the carrots he gathered.  It is attached. 
• That's a total of 178 pounds delivered in September! WOW!

• Next week I will tend the garden.

• We thank Muriel Learned and Melissa Lubbers for tending the garden over last two weeks, respectively.
• Muriel and Marie delivered 40 pounds of produce to Food Gatherers during their weeks.
• Next week, Kun Wha Kim will tend the garden.  Please use the organic insect spray (located in the chest) for the green beans, as needed.  The carrots and squash can still have more time to grow.

Thank You: We thank Darren De Zeeuw for connecting a short hose to the spigot and attaching a shut-off valve for our use. The new water shut-off is now located in the outer corner of the raised bed, in front of the church, by the stairs.  The new railing was just too high for many to climb over and it became a dangerous maneuver for many.  Thanks, Darren!

Garden Helpers 

• The Okonkwos tended the garden two weeks ago and the Reiminks last week.
• The Okonkwos delivered 5# of peas to Food Gathers.
• The Reiminks delivered 3# of peas to Food Gathers.
• This week, M. Izerman and her friend will tend the garden.  Marian, if the peas have browned out and are not producing, they may be pulled and placed in the composting/yard waste container.  Thanks.

Faith and Food Garden Sign:  I did not receive any responses from the Faith & Food group,so I spoke to Larry Gruppen, who works with wood, and he agreed to take a look at our sign.  He suggested we remove the polyurethane and replace it with stain or paint.  I deferred to his judgement and asked that he choose the easiest to maintain.  Thank you Larry for agreeing to refurbish the garden sign.
2. Garden Gate Door: Something is chewing away at the wood where the top and bottom sections meet.  It is noticeable when you open the door and look at the end.  I watched for a bit, but did not see any ants or bees coming and going.  Please keep an eye on this and notify me if you discover who are the intruders.  Thanks!
